Everybody thought brilliant Cecily would leave dead-end Miller’s Falls for something better. But a two-decades-old tragedy locks her in place. Few understand the fierce bond that Cecily and Amelia share with Hilary, who was assaulted one summer as the two other girls watched helplessly. It’s a bond of love and guilt…and a desire for vengeance that cuts clear to the bone.
So assistant DA Cecily Minos waits, eager to see the guy in her courtroom. When Amelia meets a man who has the tattoo the girls remember seeing that day, they think they’ve finally caught a break. But the police refuse to reopen the case, and it’s up to Cecily and Amelia to pursue their suspect.
Their investigation soon uncovers secrets best left buried. But the law is slow, and they’ve waited long enough for revenge…
Three nine-year-olds share the nasty event of a rape happening to one of them, Hilary, while the two others are forced to watch. It draws Amelia, Cecily and Hilary together as nothing else could. Eighteen years later, they each still suffer from the consequences of that day. Will they ever be released from that yoke forged upon them by the rapist or will they be able to break free?
In the same week that Hilary was raped, her father Duane robs his favorite drinking hole, whacking the owner in the head, ending up in prison. Is this a coincidence? Could he have had a partner?
Does Cecily really believe in the system she serves as a prosecutor to deliver justice for this cold case? Officer Nick, now turned PI, remembers the case as one does with the unsolved cases and is more than happy to help when Cecily turns to him. A few unexpected disclosures regarding family relations make it even more thrilling and spellbinding, not counting the role the Ouija board plays from beginning till end.
The psychological ramifications of what happened to the three girls and how it influenced their lives is authentic and moving, causing you to ache and long for their redemption. The author has done a great job in marrying a mystery/detective with the complicated workings and consequences of a pact made by three little girls, who carry a burden of a horrible secret that no one should ever bear. However, is revenge really that sweet after all?
A captivating suspense novel that will keep you turning the pages till the end! Way to go for a debut!
